First-home buyers snap up Brunswick cottage for $117,000 above reserve

A FIRST-HOME buyer couple has “bucked the trend” for single-front cottages in the area, after snapping up a Brunswick house for $1.267 million.

The pair were one of two keen groups to push the sale of 3 Blair St $117,000 above reserve.

The two-bedroom cottage’s clever design got the nod from both groups, making full use of the narrow block. The property also includes a separate studio with a mezzanine level.

Nelson Alexander Brunswick sales agent Peter Jones said only two of four groups got the chance to bid.

“It was a very quick auction,” he said.

“Bidding was going up in increments of $10,000 then $5000 and a couple of $2000.”

Mr Jones was also surprised by the bidders’ different demographics, with the young couple beating out a single downsizer to win the keys.

“They were poles apart,” Mr Jones said.

“The sale definitely bucked the trend for single-front cottages in Brunswick.

“But we had vendors who were flexible and were thinking of a sale about $1.1-$1.15 million.”

The house was renovated about nine years ago, with features including recycled kitchen benchtops from the Northcote Bowl bowling alley, as well as polished concrete floors, high ceilings with exposed beams and a paved courtyard.
