Tavonatti House Combines Inverted Floor Plan With Ocean Views

Cachagua is a quiet and idyllic little coastal town in Chile where sun, sand and surf provide a relaxing and rejuvenating escape. It is in this beautiful setting that the Tavonatti House was built by PAR Arquitectos; making most of the distant ocean views even while ensuring that the contemporary structure fit into the local building norms. The unique design of the house places the living area, kitchen and dining on the top level that extends outside and into the lavish wooden deck while the lower level houses the bedrooms and other private spaces. Inverting the traditional floor plan, the home offers its owners captivating ocean views from the public spaces while the bedrooms are cleverly concealed.

On the inside the house embraces a modern coastal style with white and shades of blue being coupled with different varieties of wood. Pine wood ceilings and paneling adds to the charm of the spacious home with smart ventilation and light filtering technology keeping out topical heat without hindering flow of light. Transition between both the levels of the house is seamless even as the understated décor ensures that the focus remains firmly outside. [Photography: Diego Elgueta]

In response to a sunken site with a gentle slope, with glimpses of ocean views, the program aims to raise the programmatic piano Nobile of the house, from the perpendicular overlap of 2 volumes of simple lines that make up a new dimension. The first, in elevation, in the direction of the views of the bay, which makes up the access and contains the public spaces.

  • Villa Pizzorusso

One of the most remarkable Puglia villa rentals available, this restored 16th-century masseria (fortified farmhouse) stands proudly on the ancient Appian Way. If you are looking for a luxurious holiday retreat brimming with character and history, this stunning property is for you. Deep in the countryside and surrounded by olive groves, Villa Pizzorusso is the ideal place to get away from it all. The secluded gardens, filled with orange trees and aromatic herbs, are wonderfully private, and you’ll love the magnificent 80 ft (25 m) swimming pool. Enjoy a morning coffee or early evening aperitif on the extensive first-floor terrace and take in the views across the peaceful landscape. The character of the grand old masseria is still in evidence throughout. Enter the interior through the arched portal and step into a world of barrel-vaulted ceilings, stone arches and a wealth of period details that wouldn’t look out of place on a film set. Different parts of the building date from different eras: the main wing, complete with five cupolas and frescoed ceilings, was added in the 18th century, while the main living area – including an open-plan kitchen – is located within the 17th-century stables. There’s plenty of space to accommodate up to twelve guests. Each bedroom is air-conditioned and simply furnished with neutral tones and traditional wood furniture, while the bathrooms feature striking contemporary fixtures. Four of the bedrooms are located in the main villa with the two upstairs bedrooms having private entrances and secluded access from the ground floor, while two more are located in a smaller stone building in the courtyard. There is much to see and do in the area – from the beaches of the Ionian and Adriatic coasts, to the whimsical conical architecture of the local trulli dwellings. Gourmet travelers should stop at the charming local market town of Mesagne, with its bakeries, wine co-ops and cheese shops (the fresh mozzarella and ricotta are made daily). Puglia is also rich in picturesque medieval cities, such as Ostuni and Otranto, their atmospheric narrow streets lined with an abundance of restaurants specializing in the delectable local cuisine.

  • Slatted Beach Retreat

Thrilled with the beach town location of their summer house, but not with its loud ’90s-era architecture, a family approached Blue Truck Studio with a directive — tone it down. What they had: a house with wild geometry, such as octagon-shaped rooms and triangular spaces. What they wanted: a Sea Ranch aesthetic of simple forms. Blue Truck Studio created an all-new interior of calm, open spaces that flowed easily into one another. For the exterior, the firm reconfigured windows as well as the siding, which wrapped around the house to simplify its form and provide privacy. A pivot door and two large slider doors invite ample light inside while a driveway turned soccer pitch and slatted outdoor shower for hosing off after a trip to the beach reflect the family’s love of recreation and the outdoors.
