Inside a hidden Sydney modern sanctuary, House Within by Panov—Scott reimagines an existing childhood home as a private, light-filled retreat embedded within a walled garden. Located in Sydney, the home is shaped by a considered balance between enclosure and openness, creating a secure place of refuge while inviting garden, sky and filtered light deep into the plan. Designed for a couple, the project responds to memory, neighbourhood and daily ritual through an architectural language defined by longevity and careful spatial sequencing.
The concept of House Within is expressed with clarity: a home held inside a protective garden wall. This layered approach creates a subtle threshold between the street and life within, allowing the architecture to feel both grounded and secluded. From the exterior, elements such as the garage and entry are intentionally quiet, almost disappearing into the composition. The entry sequence begins in darkness before being punctuated by a moment of light, where a sculpture is displayed, setting the tone for a home that reveals itself gradually.
At the centre of the plan, inside a hidden Sydney modern sanctuary, light becomes the defining element. The screen that wraps the house changes the relationship between interior and exterior, allowing for larger areas of glass without compromising privacy. As a result, the internal spaces are bright and calm, with muted finishes enlivened by shifting natural light. This balance enables the home to feel open while remaining protected from the street.
The living space is generous, leading into a long kitchen and dining area defined by the hard-wearing character of stainless steel. Here, the home shifts from reflection to gathering, offering a place for connection. Tucked towards the end of the space, the dining area is animated by a playful pendant light, bringing warmth and personality to the restrained material palette.
A dedicated studio forms one of the project’s most personal spaces. Designed for a practising artist, the room offers a place to draw, read, think and produce work privately. Upstairs, a small timber stair leads to a quiet window seat, creating another intimate moment for contemplation. Inside a hidden Sydney modern sanctuary, these spaces show how good design can support both creativity and stillness.
The journey continues into the main bedroom suite, where the ensuite and bathtub offer a connection to the street without sacrificing privacy. Here, the screen performs a vital role, allowing the room to feel immersed in the canopy beyond.
Material choices throughout reflect a commitment to durability and reduced resource impact. Brickworks was selected for its robustness, longevity and unadorned finish, while existing paving from the site was reused and paired with carefully matched new pavers. A sense of continuity can be seen inside a hidden Sydney modern sanctuary, allowing old and new materials to settle together in a subtle pattern of reuse.
House Within is a study in privacy, light and permanence. Through its walled garden, screened facade and carefully ordered interiors, stepping inside a hidden Sydney modern sanctuary becomes more than an experience; it allows you to see a personal home shaped by memory, craft and everyday life.
