What do you do when the owners do not want a garden—but the building rules require one?
In House off the Ground, Nanometer Architecture turned that constraint into the entire idea of the project. Instead of placing a neglected strip of greenery beside the house, they lifted the home above the slope and made the daily path to the front door pass directly through the vegetation.
Located in western Japan, this house sits on a former farming site with a steep rise from the street to the back of the lot. By raising the home on columns, the architects preserved the hillside, kept the required green space intact, created a sheltered outdoor area underneath, and transformed the garden into part of everyday life.
The result is a house that does not simply sit on the land. It changes the way the owners experience it—every single day.
