Wildcoast

Wildcoast is a minimalist home located in Portsea, Australia, designed by Studio Kennon. Salt arrives here without interruption, carried off Bass Strait across the last exposed ridge of the Mornington Peninsula, and the rendered walls have been specified to absorb it. Lime-rich surfaces chalk and soften under that kind of exposure, so the finish schedule is effectively written on a thirty-year timeline. The building is designed to look better as the coast works on it.

A long east-to-west wing carries the private rooms in a single loaded line, four bedrooms stepping down toward the garage at the western end, while a glazed living pavilion pushes north off its center. The two volumes meet as three distinct shelters wrapped around a central light court. On calm days the operable walls slide back and the living pavilion becomes a covered terrace with a roof plane and little else. When the southerly gets up, the same room reverses into an enclosure with a travertine hearth, deep reveals, and a fixed view of weather moving across the horizon.

Stone salvaged from the historic Sorrento Hotel forms the entry wall, and the choice carries more weight than reuse alone. That hotel was built in the 1870s from Point King limestone quarried a few kilometers along this same coastline, a soft yellow calcarenite full of shell fragments that gave the peninsula its early civic buildings their particular buttery grain. Laid up as rubble with generous mortar joints, the recovered blocks read as geology rather than cladding. Sunset light finds every pit and hollow in the face.

Three surfaces do all the exterior work. Board-formed concrete columns hold the pavilion with the grain of the formwork still legible across them, pale render covers the enclosing walls in a hand-applied wash that already carries cloud-like variation, and the limestone anchors the entry sequence. Two rough-sawn timber lintels project from a render wall near the entry, unsupported at one end, the only gesture in the palette that behaves like ornament. Each material ages at a different rate, which means the composition will keep rebalancing itself.
