Casa Bonanza is a minimalist house located in Madrid, Spain, designed by PLANTEA. The steel staircase, described by the architect as “resembling a ship,” serves as both a functional element and a sculptural floor lamp, its metallic surface catching and reflecting light as it winds upward through the space. The home’s relationship with furniture is particularly evident in its treatment of the ground floor as one expansive lounge area.

Here, carefully selected sofas and lounge chairs don’t simply occupy space – they help define it. The furniture arrangement creates subtle delineations between gathering areas while maintaining the architect’s vision of a limitless porch. Low-profile seating ensures uninterrupted views of the landscape, while robust outdoor furniture pieces transition seamlessly between covered and open areas.

The material palette shows remarkable restraint: stained pine plywood cabinets echo the large wooden panels that can enclose the space, while Campaspero stone flooring provides a continuous surface that flows from interior to exterior. This coherence extends to the lighting design, where sconces and pendant lights are treated as architectural elements rather than mere accessories. The lighting fixtures work in concert with the retractable awnings, described poetically as “unfolding like sails,” to modulate the quality of light throughout the day.

The furniture selection in the upper level responds to a different imperative. While the ground floor embraces fluidity and openness, the private spaces above feature more intimate arrangements. Side tables and consoles are positioned to create purposeful moments of pause, their forms echoing the “sleek, prismatic” quality of the building’s upper volume.
