Colwood House is a minimal residence located in Vancouver, Canada, with interiors designed by Erica Colpitts, and architecture by Olson Kundig. The home’s renovation, initiated in 2017 and completed in 2021, respects the original Mid-Century Modern structure while incorporating Olson Kundig’s design principles. The firm’s approach, combining contemporary lines with traditional techniques and a focus on integrating architecture with natural surroundings, resonated with the homeowners. The residence is occupied by a family deeply involved in community wellness through arts and nature. The wife’s background in psychology and arts and the husband’s entrepreneurial experience shape their lifestyle. They moved from New York City seeking a community-oriented environment to raise their children.
Their home reflects a balance of aesthetic appeal and practicality, designed to host gatherings comfortably. The project’s challenge lay in blending Olson Kundig’s architectural vision with softer, romantic interior elements. This required a deep understanding of the firm’s style and the clients’ preferences, ensuring a cohesive and integral design. The construction phase coincided with the onset of the pandemic, presenting unique challenges in coordination and maintaining health protocols. The home spans 3300 square feet across split levels, featuring three bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a recreational room, and an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area. The layout emphasizes intimate spaces with moments of expansion, such as the spacious foyer and extensive forest views.
The design adopts a neutral color palette, incorporating warm whites, creams, and dark greys, complementing the natural materials used. The standout feature is the original rust-colored brick fireplace, a nod to the neighborhood’s architectural history. Materials were chosen for their natural qualities, including various woods, metals, wools, and linens. Blackened steel is prominent throughout, alongside Corten steel for the front door. White oak floors and a hemlock plank ceiling underwent custom staining to achieve harmonious tones. The kitchen millwork, crafted by Robin Woronko of Intempo Interiors, exemplifies artisanal skill, featuring custom-milled white oak planks with a rustic finish.
