Leibal — Maison de la Claye

Maison de la Claye is a minimalist house located in La Claye, France, designed by atelier iso architectes. The corner plot had sat vacant long enough to register as a missing tooth in the village fabric, a dent creuse where the continuous line of gables and pierre de pays walls briefly gives out. It once belonged to the neighboring property, serving as its kitchen garden and chicken run, and it still held a roughly 25-square-meter poulailler along with a well reputed to be among the best supplied in the village. Those two survivals set the terms of the plan before any wall was drawn.

Aligning the house north to south, matching the orientation of its neighbors, turns its gable ends toward rue du Lay and leaves both the coop and the well untouched. The move also splits the 300-square-meter site into two gardens with distinct temperaments. At the corner sits an avant-jardin, a threshold garden mediating between the house and rue du Bourg, while a second, more sheltered garden occupies the west flank. The living room lands between them and reads in both directions, flanked by two bedrooms whose open bathing areas, each holding a shower and a basin, sit within the rooms rather than behind doors. Mezzanines above each bedroom absorb an additional double bed.

The two long elevations are not treated equally. The west face opens on a full structural bay while the east works at half that rhythm, so the joinery itself records which garden the house prefers. Facades touching the parcel boundaries and the street are laid in reclaimed pierre de pays, salvaged from the site and a neighboring plot, anchoring the volume in the village line. The garden-facing elevations turn to timber.

A 0.60-meter grid governs the entire structure, legible in plan and elevation alike, and every module is registered on the facade by an exposed post. Between them, three-ply Douglas fir panels handle both infill and cladding modenature. Shutters and a pivoting entry door in the same material close the building into a single uninterrupted surface, erasing the openings entirely. The self-build logic and dimensional discipline recall Walter Segal’s timber method, where a legible module is what makes non-professional construction feasible in the first place.
