Leibal — Oasis

Oasis is a minimalist house located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Unknown Works. The renovation stood in stark contrast to the home’s previous condition, which was marked by a lack of natural light, poor ventilation, and outdated decor featuring faux marble and worn-out flooring. At the heart of the transformation was a reevaluation of the home’s L-shaped floor plan, typical of Victorian terraces, which had initially left living spaces feeling disconnected from the outdoor area, cluttered with dense foliage. The redesign was aimed at creating a flexible living space that enhanced airflow, maximized natural light, and supported a variety of activities, from cooking to unwinding. Recognizing the kitchen as a communal focal point, Unknown Works extended the home modestly into the garden. This move integrated a modern stainless steel kitchen and modular furniture, also designed by the studio.

This extension not only redefined the home’s layout but also introduced an internal courtyard, effectively blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces with concrete flooring that extended outside, creating an all-year-round al fresco dining experience. To tackle common challenges in London terraced houses such as limited light and air circulation, an internal courtyard was introduced, enhancing ventilation and serving as a bright counterpoint to the typically cramped conditions. A minimalist material palette of glass, white oiled timber, concrete, and stainless steel was selected to reflect light and create a cohesive flow throughout the home. This approach was accented by lively details, like a bright yellow door handle and selected pieces of art, adding layers of character to the space. The renovation also featured the introduction of bespoke furniture and joinery, including a large stainless steel table and innovative plywood storage solutions, all designed to provide flexibility and adaptability within the home’s footprint. The inclusion of acoustic insulation and the use of resilient bars in the ceiling ensured a quiet living environment, free from external noise.
