The Makers Barn is a minimalist residence located outside of London, United Kingdom, designed by Hutch with styling by Sarah Birks. Key elements of the design include an oversized central chimney crafted from board-formed concrete, robust plastered walls, timber columns, and a roof adorned with larch timber cladding. The inspiration for this contemporary interpretation draws from the charming thatched Tudor cottages renowned for their distinctive chimneys. The modest size of The Makers Barn led to a thoughtful approach, resulting in a single, open, and interconnected space that offers unique vantage points. These design choices provide glimpses between the living and bedroom areas while framing captivating views to the south.
Within this space, a sunken bathtub and concrete shower are nestled beneath a section of the roof, cleverly illuminated by a skylight. To further enhance functionality, bespoke timber furnishings have been seamlessly integrated to define different functional zones. The interior design of The Makers Barn places a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and organic materials, reflecting earthy tones borrowed from nature. Clay-plastered walls and ceilings, end grain flooring, and English elm joinery exude a warm and inviting atmosphere. Artisans and makers have contributed to the interior style, with timber sliding doors framing and capturing breathtaking views of the rolling hills to the south. A central board-formed concrete chimney elegantly bisects the larch timber roof, serving as a striking focal point.
Wildflower beds and grass paths gracefully weave through the landscape, enhancing the natural appeal of the surroundings. The kitchen area features a custom-made Jacob Alexander Elm kitchen island with overhanging metal storage, boasting a lightweight design that allows guests to enjoy views of the landscape beyond. Zellige wall tiles draw the eye upward to a skylight, flooding the kitchen with abundant natural light. The interior furnishings of The Makers Barn are a testament to the designers’ commitment to curated craftsmanship. Pieces from selected artisans complement the space beautifully. The living area is graced by Mario Bellini’s Camaleonda sofa, Sergio Calatroni’s Papiro floor lamp, and a Pinch Anders pendant.
Cappelen Dimyr’s shaggy rug sprawls across the end grain timber flooring, evoking the charm of English timber cobbled streets. In their quest to furnish and style The Makers Barn, the designers sought out makers who echoed their design ethos. Handmade wood-turned pieces from Ash and Plumb, ceramics from Jono Smart, and forged kitchenware from blacksmith Alex Pole enrich the interior. Iconic pieces, including Mario Bellini’s Camaleonda sofa, Sergio Calatroni’s Papiro floor lamp, and Willy Guhl’s loop chair and planter, add character to the space. Swedish Cappelen Dimyr’s shaggy rug, By Molle’s natural linens, and plant-fiber pendants from Pinch infuse warmth into every corner of The Makers Barn.
