Greenery, Unique Dimensions and Angular Charm Shape the House Between Trees

When it comes to unusual design that moves away from the mundane and gives homeowners a fresh perspective on spatial rearrangement, the House Between Trees in Brazil comes up trumps. Designed by Ateliê de Arquitetura Líquida, the design of the house has been largely influenced by the unique lot its sits in, giving it a geometric charm of its own! This along with two rotating blind blocks and volumes with smart angulation ensure that those inside can enjoy the best of nature while also experiencing complete privacy.

A spacious and smart platform-style balcony welcomes everyone at this house and it is this platform that leads into the open plan living area, kitchen and dining space. Sliding glass doors connect the kitchen and dining area with the generous backyard outside. The garage, living area and the backyard flow into one another in a seamless fashion and with changing seasons, the colors of the entry and the living area itself constantly change. The naturally uneven site creates three distinct living zones with the private bedrooms being relegated to the rear section.

All the spaces of the house were thought for living together; in the living room the architecture itself functions as an integrating space, the bleachers in the kitchen and the access steps, for example, can be places where people can accommodate; always connected with the inside and with nature on the outside. The house is not closed to the outside by the absence of windows to the street but tries to preserve its essence in its interior.

Located on a steep Cherimoya orchard in the foothills of Carpinteria, Shepard Mesa House is a new home for a young family of four. The neighborhood consists of dispersed homes along a single road leading up and around the crown of a hill. Sited diagonally to the contours of the hill, the house slopes with the natural fall of the land. Interior functions at three different levels are gathered under a single gable roof. Bedrooms at the lower elevations are nestled into the working orchard around them where the trees provide the most privacy. The living room, kitchen and dining area on the upper level opens downslope and affords the most expansive views. Neighboring homes are just out of sight as the view stretches out across the valley to the backside of Rincon Mountain. The siting, orientation, and plan take advantage of natural light and ventilation reducing the reliance on mechanical systems and creating a living experience in balance with the site.

  • Bonny Doon Forest Temple

Greetings! We would like to submit our sweet little cabin to be featured in Dwell. My beloved and I just finished remodeling the home this past summer. I work as an interior designer & Jamie is a painter/contemporary artist – but we do lots of other things too. The intention behind this space in the woods is to offer a safe space for healing work, while it is our main home – we also hold retreats, song circles, sound healing, kirtan, yoga gatherings and tea ceremonies. It’s hard to explain the powerful feeling this land holds if you have not visited, but it’s palpable upon arrival. Your nervous system begins to regulate and all the worries of this human experience wash away. The cabin is nestled in the Santa Cruz mountains surrounded by lush forest and old growth redwoods. Only 15 minutes down the road, you are at some of the most beautiful clean beaches on the coast. The house was already very charming & has great bones, it just needed some TLC. I have lots of ‘before’ photos if you are interested. I love Japanese style bathing rituals, so we created an outdoor spa with huge sun deck, cedar hot tub, cedar sauna, and cold plunge. We also have a large yurt which is where we hold most of the gatherings & ceremonies. There is also a cute guest house not pictured in the attached photos. I hope you can see the magic through these images.
    With Gratitude,
    Eva & Jamie
