Elk Range Overlook is a contemporary mountain residence nestled in an aspen grove in Aspen, Colorado.

Designed by CCY Architects, this family home harmoniously connects with nature, showcasing breathtaking views of the Elk Mountain range. Experience a tranquil retreat that effortlessly blends modern alpine architecture, sustainable materials, and seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces.

Nestled within an aspen grove on a gently sloping site, this family residence offers breathtaking views of Colorado’s Elk Mountain range to the south. Designed as a modern alpine architectural masterpiece, the residence features solid building forms, meticulously detailed materials, and exposed structure, creating a rich dialogue with the surrounding natural landscape.

The design team faced the challenge of creating a highly detailed, tranquil private home that seamlessly connects to its natural surroundings. Their objectives were to craft a family legacy home with flexibility to entertain, provide distinctive outdoor spaces for gathering and experiencing the landscape, capture the stunning views, and use materials that reflect the client’s contemporary mountain lifestyle.

The sloped site presented both challenges and opportunities. The design team put great effort into integrating the home into the topography and connecting interior spaces to the outdoor landscape while preserving the site’s natural character.

Sustainability was a central consideration in the design, with carefully selected materials to minimize environmental impact and maximize durability. Farm-raised Port Orford Cedar was chosen for its aesthetic, structural, and durable qualities, creating a distinctive and warm character throughout the residence.

Water elements throughout the property add a layer of tranquility and connect indoor and outdoor spaces. A custom swimming pool with a horizontal water feature and a spa nestled in a native aspen grove further deepen the connection to the natural environment.

Large sliding glass walls allow seamless blending of indoor and outdoor spaces, providing a continuous experience of the surrounding landscape. The main living areas open onto expansive outdoor terraces, creating an ideal setting for entertainment and relaxation in all seasons.

Elk Range Overlook represents the perfect synthesis of contemporary aesthetics, family functionality, and a deep connection with the natural beauty of Aspen, Colorado.

Artistic Character The biggest challenge of the project Bunkherr came up at the outset of the collaboration between the client and the architects. The attractive hillside property was located in a former holiday home neighborhood set amidst a picturesque landscape in Hesse, Germany. Due to great dedication, perseverance and a tenacious struggle for the client’s strong desire to build their home in this very attractive place, a construction permit could finally be successfully acquired. The design is based on the idea of a human back, which divides the property into two areas: a public hillside area, which contains the entrance to the house, the garage and a spacious, plaza-like courtyard – an inviting place to share time with friends and neighbors. Even the client’s horse finds room here. And it also has a private valley facing area, which offers a magnificent view of nature. The structure of the building is defined by two building blocks, which are arranged at right angles to one another, the upper floor is cantilevered towards the valley. The private rooms of the parents are accommodated there. Below on the ground floor there is an open kitchen, dining and living area, which is characterized by the room-high glazing. A central design concept was to create spaces for the works of the artistically influenced client. For example, the interior of the house, has sculptures and paintings that add a special personal touch to the timeless, modern style of the house. Only a few materials, such as the white screed, which is not only used on the floor but also on the furniture, and the specially designed wooden boards provide a stylish setting for this.
