Living Big in a Small House

This house is only about 850 square feet — but it feels much larger because so much of it was intentionally left open.

Designed by KWCA – Kosala Weerasekara Chartered Architects in Kaduwela, Sri Lanka, the Studio House takes a different approach to living small. Instead of filling the site with enclosed rooms, the architects raised part of the house and extended everyday life into gardens, covered spaces, decks, balconies, and circulation areas outside the walls.

Its exposed steel frame stretches beyond the enclosed volume, while the garden continues beneath the upper floor. Lightweight construction, corrugated metal cladding, cross-ventilation, and a narrow footprint all follow the same idea: build only what is necessary and let the remaining space do more.

The Studio House shows that making a small home feel bigger doesn’t always require more square footage. Sometimes, it means building less.
