Folded Steel Defines the Asymmetrical Form of TABLE LAMP Z

Designed by Cobre Estudio, TABLE LAMP Z explores how a simple manufacturing process can generate a distinctive and expressive lighting object. The project starts from a single sheet of 2 mm steel, using laser cutting and folding as the main processes to define both its structure and its visual identity. The lamp is conceived around the exploration of folded sheet-metal surfaces and the relationship between geometry, balance, and visual weight. Its asymmetrical configuration creates an intentional sense of imbalance, while the precise folds provide the structural stability required for everyday use. Rather than treating the structure as something purely functional, the folds become the main formal language of the object. The central body is developed as a continuous folded piece that embraces the light source. When illuminated, the warm light interacts with the surrounding metal surfaces, reinforcing the contrast between the solid material and the light it produces.

One Steel Component Defines the Lamp’s Structure and Identity

The result is a lamp that can function as a desk or bedside light while also taking on the character of a small sculptural object. The project by Cobre Estudio’s designers Malena Vivanco and Miranda Gurny follows a deliberately reduced approach to production: a single main component, a limited number of manufacturing operations, and a material whose own properties define the final form. Laser cutting allows the sheet to be precisely prepared before folding, while the 2 mm steel provides the necessary rigidity and presence. A fabric cord, available in different colors, introduces a subtle element of customization and allows the lamp to adapt to different interior contexts. TABLE LAMP Z ultimately investigates how material, manufacturing, and function can work together to give a simple object a strong and timeless identity.
