Designed for a young family transitioning from apartment living, the project was shaped by a desire for more space, greater functionality and an environment that could evolve over time. Rather than simply increasing the home’s footprint, the design focuses on creating a sense of calm through carefully resolved details, generous natural light and strong connections to landscape. The result captures the essence of inside a Sydney family home designed to feel like a coastal retreat, where comfort and liveability guide every decision.
The architecture draws on brutalist influences, providing a confident counterpoint to the varied streetscape. Concrete is celebrated throughout the project, highlighting craftsmanship and material honesty while responding to the coastal conditions of the site. Lush landscaping softens the architectural form, creating an arrival sequence that gradually reveals the home and establishes a sense of retreat from the street.
Throughout the residence, moments of detail bring character and depth to the interiors. Two staircases offer distinct experiences of movement and connection. One references the work of Carlo Scarpa through its sculptural expression, while the other takes on a ribbon-like quality that gently links the home’s levels. Together, these elements reflect the project’s commitment to celebrating craftsmanship and thoughtful design.
At the centre of the home, the kitchen anchors the living spaces beneath a dramatic void that introduces light and volume. The planning strategy sought to create an open-plan environment without sacrificing intimacy, allowing individual zones to feel distinct while remaining visually connected.
