Gold Coast home towers over waterfront block after extension

TOWERING over its waterfront block, this Mermaid Waters home is one of grand proportions.

Owner James Barry said it was big when he and wife Sandy Dykzeul bought it five and a half years ago but they have since added to its scale.

“In the past year, I’ve put another bedroom and bathroom on,” said Mr Barry, who is a builder by trade.

He has also fixed up the bathrooms and added all the wood in and around the home, including the outdoor timber entertainment deck.

“Even though I haven’t built the house, I’ve done a substantial amount of work outside and inside.”

He couldn’t be sure how long the renovations had taken.

“It’s hard to say when you’re a builder, you sort of fit it in around other jobs,” he said.

He said the open kitchen, living and dining area was one of his favourite parts of the home, mainly because of the void in the middle.

“It almost feels like you don’t have a ceiling above you,” he said.

Mr Barry said it had been a “beautiful home to live in” with his wife and children but said it was time to sell.
