The single-level residence was recently treated to a tasteful remodel, which modernized the home while maintaining a vintage vibe. New flooring and windows were added throughout the open-concept layout, as well as ubiquitous wood ceilings. Stone tile flooring was also added to provide continuity throughout the new interior.

Wall-to-wall sliding glass doors open the living room to the backyard patio, while also framing views of the pool. Globe pendant lights enhance the home's vintage flair.

Having lovingly restored the front of this Californian Bungalow, our clients were seeking help to reinvent the back of the home. The brief was to create a functional, beautiful and bright abode for their family. We achieved this with a combination of re-purposing the existing spaces and adding a small extension to the back and side. We added a new Kitchen, Bathroom, Laundry and Living space, all with a strong connection to the outdoors. We played with the ceiling forms to create spaces within the overall space, while soft natural light is introduced into the depths of the home with skylights. We also paid homage to the simple heritage details of the era by referencing the overall form and textures of the old Californian Bungalow.

  • Add/Subtract House

The Add/Subtract House is derived from the stereotomic operation of subtracting from and adding to a solid volume to enable specific programmatic relationships and daylight conditions. Sited on a typical 50’x150’ single-family residential lot in Austin, Texas, the design questions the standard house massing and arrangement by stretching along the length of the lot. Rather than single the dichotomy of front yard and backyard, the design establishes smaller courtyards, hardscapes and softscapes at various scales to relate to individual rooms. The external material palette (standing seam metal, tongue & groove wood paneling, and stucco) is applied to reinforce the distribution of individual program elements. Each material is composed into folding planes which capture space and define zones throughout the house. Every room in the house benefits from natural light from at least two sides as daylight is modulated throughout, offsetting the need for electric light during daylight hours and allowing occupants to more directly track seasonal and daily patterns.
