LAYER designs MAZZU modular outdoor sleep system
The MAZZU Camping Mattress is a modular sleep system for outdoor use, developed by design studio LAYER for sleep start-up MAZZU. The foam-free mattress is built around 72 independent spring units that adjust to the body, offering ergonomic support in a portable, repairable format.
The mattress system replaces conventional foam or inflatable pads with isolated, pre-compressed coil units encased in durable jackets. Each spring unit adapts independently to the body’s contours, supporting various sleeping positions. A modular construction allows the components to be assembled using snap-fit connectors and paracord lashings, with a slim topper providing surface leveling and additional softness. The color palette references typical outdoor gear, incorporating foliage tones and bright accents for visibility, while the open structure exposes the engineering of the spring units.

MAZZU Camping Mattress is Compact, Repairable, and Eco-Friendly
Studio LAYER’s design for the spring units allows them to nest compactly for transport. The complete system, including the foldable base, spring modules, and topper, fits into a wheeled case approximately the size of a standard cooler. The case can be repurposed as a storage box or nightstand on site, adding functional versatility at the campsite.
Foam-based mattresses contribute significantly to global waste and chemical pollution. The MAZZU Camping Mattress is entirely free of PU foam and glue. Each component, from the base to spring units, and topper, can be individually cleaned, repaired, or replaced, extending product lifespan and reducing environmental impact in line with circular economy principles.
the MAZZU Camping Mattress is a modular outdoor sleep system by LAYER
MAZZU is a Chinese sleep start-up focused on engineering-driven, user-centred solutions. The camping mattress follows the original MAZZU Mattress, also designed by LAYER, which received a Red Dot Design Best of Best Award for its modular, foam-free construction. Together, the two products demonstrate an approach to sleep systems that emphasizes sustainability, modularity, and high-performance design for both indoor and outdoor contexts. The MAZZU camping mattress launches in October 2025.
