Acclaimed architect Lina Ghotmeh is transforming the home of Usmon Khodjaev, a reformer turned president, into a museum honoring the ideas, influences, and continued impact of Jadidism. Set to open in 2027, the work was commissioned by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation as a way to preserve the legacy of this late 19th and early 20th-century reformist movement.

Khodjaev was a champion of this movement, which sought to modernize education and foster progress across Central Asia. He later became the first president of the Bukhara People’s Republic. Khodjaev’s son donated the home to the Ministry of Culture for the purpose of transforming it into a museum honoring the Jadid legacy.

Jadid is derived from the Arabic and Persian word jadid, which means “new,” and given the concept, Ghotmeh is the perfect person to renew the space. The Lebanese architect, who was recently appointed to renovate the British Museum’s Western Range galleries, weaves contemporary design with historical memory to great effect. By mixing traditional methods with modern flair, Ghotmeh tells the story of this important movement.

“The residence of Usmon Khodjaev is more than a house. It is a vessel of memory, a silent witness to an age of change, Ghotmeh tells designboom. Within its walls echo the voices of a generation that dreamed of new schools, new freedoms, and a new future for Central Asia. It bears the weight of history—the aspirations of the Jadid reformers, the collapse of the Emirate, the shadows of the Soviet years—and now, the possibility of a new chapter where memory and imagination converge.”
