How do you turn an extra-long space into a cozy living room? When a homeowner came to Decorilla with a fireplace to preserve and a dream of a perfect reading nook, the challenge was set. Follow the transformation of this spacious room into a warm, intimate retreat, from moodboard to final render.

The Challenge: Cozy Living Room + Reading Nook Design

A homeowner reached out to Decorilla to transform their living room into a cozy sitting room with a reading nook at one end. The fireplace wall and its flanking benches would stay, while everything else was open for reconsideration. In a nutshell, the designer had to:

  • Select new seating and accent furniture for a cozy living room layout
  • Develop a reading nook design for the far end of the room
  • Choose an area rug to anchor the main seating zone
  • Recommend wall color or treatment options
  • Source modern, transitional pieces from preferred retailers

Design Inspiration: Cozy Sitting Room Ideas

The client’s Pinterest board pointed toward layered spaces in predominantly earthy schemes oozing organic vibes. There were a lot of textured rugs over neutral floors. Upholstery in natural fabrics defined seating arranged for conversation. Wood also appeared often. In one image, it defined a statement feature, a coffee table with a sculptural pedestal base. In another, it was a credenza with pronounced grain running horizontally. What connected these references was a warmth that came from material. It was apparent that the client was going for a cozy living room mood with tactile quality above everything else.

Inspiration for the reading nook design came from comfy corners sized for one or two people. A curved armchair tucked beneath an arc lamp, a low table nearby for a book or a cup. Art placement and lighting direction helped mark where one zone ended, and the other began. These spaces worked on their own, pulled slightly apart from the main seating area. The client needed that separation within a single room that could hold both functions comfortably.

Initial Concepts: Finding the Right Designer

Decorilla’s team identified two professionals for this cozy living room project, both with strong track records in warm contemporary residential work. Sierra G. and Marya W. then submitted preliminary moodboards addressing the main seating area and the reading nook design.

Sierra’s proposal brought a richer color range to the space. Her palette included rust and warm brown against a cream base, with accents in forest green. Vertical wood slat panels flanked the fireplace in her concept, and a patterned rug with bold black lines anchored the seating zone. Two swivel chairs faced the sectional, with an arc lamp reaching over from a side. For the reading nook, she specified walnut bookcases and a textured, curvy armchair positioned near a small drink table.

Marya took a quieter direction. Her moodboard centered on Benjamin Moore White Dove for the walls, with olive green and warm neutrals carrying through the furniture. A white modular sofa and two olive accent chairs defined the main seating, with a round coffee table in light oak between them. Her reading nook design placed a white swivel chair beside a rattan floor lamp, with a large abstract canvas mounted on the adjacent wall. Floating walnut shelves lined the fireplace wall in this layout, matching the ledge that would hold the client’s existing benches.

Marya’s approach aligned more closely with what the client had in mind. The softer palette felt appropriate for a cozy sitting room that would see daily use, and her reading nook design offered the separation the brief called for. So this proposal moved forward.

“Renderings look fabulous!  We both love the look…so peaceful and all seating looks comfortable!” The client’s feedback left no doubt about their confidence in the direction Marya had taken.

As expected, their new cozy living room is all about material consistency and spatial clarity. Warm walnut repeats across the layout, from the floating shelves beside the fireplace to the coffee table’s pedestal base. Olive green distinguishes the accent chairs, picked up again in a few pillows on the cream sectional. The palette remains restrained, and that restraint is what makes the room feel serene.

A gray sofa is removed, and the window bench is no longer underused or dressed in pillows that don’t relate to anything else. The TV is also gone, per the client’s request, leaving it to the fireplace to anchor the room properly. Floating walnut shelves fill the adjacent alcove where the wall once felt flat.

Shelving runs floor to ceiling. Books lean at angles; ceramics and small plants occupy the upper levels. LED strips behind each shelf cast a glow that warms the cozy sitting room after dark. Woven roman shades filter the midday light mentioned in the brief, and their natural fiber reads alongside the rattan and wood tones elsewhere.

Seating in the main zone gathers around a cream sectional with a chaise end. Its L-shape opens toward the hearth and defines the conversation area. The round oak coffee table is scaled for easy circulation. Underfoot, a tonal rug in cream and tan quiets the floor.

At the far end of the room, the reading nook design carves out its own territory. A cream wingback armchair anchors this corner, positioned beneath a large abstract canvas in ochre and olive tones. Plenty of daylight floods this area through the window, while the rattan floor lamp takes the illumination role after dark. The chair is cream linen, softer in profile than the sectional’s clean lines. A small metal side table keeps books within reach, and a tall palm softens the corner where two walls meet.

Transforming Challenges into Creative Solutions

The living room brief came with a fixed element: the fireplace and its flanking benches had to stay. Marya built the design around this constraint. The benches received new cushions in cream linen, dressed with pillows that match the sectional. What once felt disconnected now reads as part of the seating arrangement. In addition, the window bench on the left doubles as overflow seating when guests are over. Keeping these built-ins actually helped the budget, freeing up funds for higher-quality upholstery and the custom floating shelves that transformed the adjacent wall.

Design Details: Sourcing the Perfect Pieces

Decorilla’s 3D visualizations helped the client get a clear grasp of the full concept before committing to any purchases. Each piece could be evaluated in context, at scale, beside the finishes and furniture it would actually live with. That clarity made decisions easier. The sectional’s cream linen, the olive velvet on the accent chairs, all of it could be tested on screen before arriving in the room.

Trade discounts through Decorilla’s furniture shop also helped stretch the budget further than retail pricing would allow. The client wanted pieces from specific vendors, and Marya was able to source from those at reduced rates. Higher quality became possible without pushing past the upper limit. Marya refined selections across several rounds, adjusting scale and fabric based on the client’s responses.

The final quote said it plainly: “Hi Marya, Thank you for a wonderful design, we love it!!! It was a pleasure to work with you!
