You never see Casa Akíga all at once.
Hidden on a steep tropical hillside in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, the house reveals itself little by little as we move down the property. Instead of creating one massive building, Studio Saxe divided the home across different levels and connected its two main structures with a bridge suspended through the trees.
Local stone retaining walls anchor the house to the slope, while a lighter steel structure allows roofs and living spaces to reach outward. Deep overhangs provide shade and protection from tropical rain, while large openings create natural cross-ventilation throughout the home.
Some views reach toward the Pacific Ocean. Others stop just a few feet away, at trees, rocks, and vegetation. The forest is not simply something surrounding the house. It remains between its spaces and becomes part of the way we move through it.
