Bantam 73" Sofa
A DWR best-seller for over a decade, the Bantam Collection (2004) celebrates the soft, less-machined brand of modernism that arose in the United States in the 1930s. Delivering physical comfort as well as aesthetic pleasure, the entire frame is lightly padded and finely upholstered with a fitted back and a single row of button tufting. Matching piping along the seams reinforces the clean lines of Bantam’s frame. Tapered solid wood legs lend visual lightness. Made in U.S.A. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Gabriel Tan Port Coffee Table
While serving in the Singaporean Navy, Gabriel Tan became aware that such a thing as industrial design existed, and a floodgate opened. He soon earned a design degree from the National University of Singapore and went on to open his own studio with an international reach. But Tan never forgot his days aboard ship, and when it came time to design the Port Table (2017), he drew inspiration from a common feature of ships: the porthole, with its stout frame surrounding a pane of circular glass. The design was an attempt to rethink marble and glass coffee tables with vulnerable exposed edges. “In the same way a porthole frame protects,” Tan explains, “the round wooden frame of the Port Table protects the edges of the stone or glass from chipping and protects people from sharp edges.” Likewise, he says, “The three fin-like legs have soft edges, too, which are easy on legs and also beautifully sculptural.” Made in Malaysia. Nanimarquina Shade Runner
Turkish designer Begüm Cana Özgür earned her master’s degree at Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 2014, she started her studio in Istanbul, where the cultural richness of the land has provided her with major inspiration, particularly with respect to ancient crafting techniques. Shade (2017) is a hand-loomed fringed runner that features neutral tones and a subtly captivating asymmetrical linear pattern. Together with nonprofit Care & Fair, Nani Marquina fights illegal child labor in carpet manufacturing. Made in India. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
HAY Mags Soft Low 2.5-Seater Sofa
The minimalist Mags Sofa is as perfect on the inside as it is on the outside. That means that it’s engineered for durability and comfort with perfect composition and high quality padding. The deep seat and high armrests make this three-seater versatile and flexible for all your friends and family and their various sitting needs. It has a strong presence with its firm expression and fixed upholstery, but it also works beautifully with colorful throws and cushions for a softer, warmer look. Offi Mag Table
The multifunctional Mag Table (1999) serves as a table or stool that holds magazines in its “elbow.” And that’s not all this hybrid furniture form can do – position it vertically, so it’s standing on its narrow end, and it works as a laptop stand you can use when you’re seated. A continuous sheet of molded birch plywood forms this bentwood table. The wood veneer or white laminate surface is durable and easy to maintain. The Mag Table offers an inexpensive yet distinctive solution for home or office; use it next to a bed or sofa, or as a compact workstation for computing. Made in Latvia. Jonas Wagell Jonas Armchair
Having worked in the fields of graphic design and project management and studying in his native Sweden and the United States, Jonas Wagell is a well-rounded designer and architect. His Mini House, a 160-square-foot prefab structure, earned him attention in 2008 as one of the world’s 50 hottest young architects. Working out of a studio in the Södermalm district of Stockholm (which Vogue called the coolest neighborhood in Europe), Wagell calls his approach “generous minimalism.” For the Jonas Collection (2016), he sought to create a piece that could be enjoyed every day – “a hub in the house that people would gather round to socialize and talk.” To encourage that, Wagell prudently specified cushions with feather fill and eased edges, arms with a gentle arc and legs slender and tall. “I try to create objects detached from immediate trends,” he says, “products that I can be proud of and that can be justified and appreciated for years to come.” Made in Canada. Afteroom Story Bookcase
Fascinated by the transformation of spaces over long stretches of time, Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei invented the word Afteroom to name their studio in Stockholm. “We simply want to create things people won’t get rid of,” says Chen-Yen. Their designs are marked by a spare style, and their use of tubular frameworks is a nod to the Bauhaus. In creating the Story Bookcase (2017), they brought a new twist to Sapien-style vertical book storage by allowing the user to position the shelves facing forward or to the side. By holding texts horizontally in a vertical stack, Story holds dozens of books in a very compact footprint. “We hope people see it as a quiet, functional sculpture,” says Hung-Ming. All-metal construction and a heavy weighted base provide strength and stability. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Softline Noomi Swivel Chair
Whether developing furniture, textiles, lamps or toys, Danish designer Susanne Grønlund starts with a list of what she doesn’t want to create. This discipline has made her studio a go-to for innovative, thoughtful design that’s rooted in Scandinavian traditions. In creating her Noomi Swivel Chair (2013), she didn’t want to design just another attractive piece, so she thought at length about functionality. Yes, everyone wants to sit comfortably, but what if you also want to easily turn to speak to the person next to you, or turn away from a distraction for some privacy? In other words, why just sit when you can swivel? Simple, elegant and understated, Noomi stands on a smooth-moving – and soothing – 360-degree swivel base. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Lapalma Jey Table
A graduate in product design from Art Center College of Design in La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland, Francesco Rota opened his own studio in 1998, where he works on designing furniture, lighting, interiors, showrooms and event spaces. Over the years, he’s collaborated with high-end brands such as Knoll®, L’Oreal, Mercedes Benz® and many others. His pieces are marked by their comfort, functionality and simplicity, equally inspired by the aesthetics of iconic designs and efficiency of modern-day production processes. Giorgio Soressi Como Sectional Chaise
To create his Como Collection (2007), Italian designer Giorgio Soressi enlisted one of the most widely respected companies in Italy. Located near Lake Como, this family-run business is still producing best-in-class sofas and chairs for many prestigious retailers to this day, blending design, research, cutting-edge technologies and artisanal techniques. The elegant and extremely well-constructed Como Collection is built with solid steel frames and cast-aluminum legs. Contrasting that heft and stability are cushions that scream, “You’ve got to sit here!” with their goose feather filling and variable-density foam that’s firmer in front for support. Two Como Throw Pillows included. Made in Italy. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Maharam Outdoor Pillow in Beacon
The Maharam Design Studio specializes in the design and development of textiles for commercial and residential interiors. Reflecting an appreciation of history with a focus on aesthetic and industrial innovation, Maharam’s textiles are in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cooper Hewitt and MoMA, among others. Expanding the collection to exterior areas, the Outdoor Pillow in Beacon (2017) consists of high-performance solution-dyed polyolefin fabric filled with fast-drying polyester fibers. It features a spacious, minimal pattern with multicolor geometric accents for an embroidered effect. Outdoor safe but not intended to be left outside for extended periods. Store in dry place when not in use. Fabric made in U.S.A. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Chris Liljenberg Halstrøm Georg Stool
The Georg Collection (2013) is the work of Chris Liljenberg Halstrøm, a Nordic designer who studied in Sweden and Denmark. Operating from her studio in Copenhagen, Halstrøm takes a minimalist approach to maximizing functionality. The Georg Stool serves as the perfect accompaniment to the Georg Console (available separately), which measures just a shade under 13 inches deep and can be used as an entryway table, small desk, vanity, dining nook or any other tabletop solution. Stool includes a cushion. Made in Denmark. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Nathan Yong Line Credenza, Small
“I have always been inspired by the simple forms of turntables and entertainment units from the 1960s,” says designer Nathan Yong – a remarkable statement when you learn that Yong grew up in a wooden hut by the sea, where he and his brother made their own toys and “waited for low tides so we could pick up treasures from the shore.” Growing up with the beach as entertainment, Yong developed into a resourceful designer, whose work captivated us with its quiet elegance. At Salone del Mobile, the annual furniture fair in Milan, Yong showed us his Line Media Console, and we liked the aesthetic so much that we asked him to expand the collection. Another smart storage option, the Line Small Credenza (2010) has two louvered doors, four cubbies and two drawers. The louvered design also serves a functional purpose, allowing infrared light to reach remote-controlled devices stored inside. Constructed with leveling floor glides for uneven surfaces. Made in Malaysia. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Linie Design Memo Rug
A graduate of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Urd Moll Gundermann has worked with a number of international companies in the textile, fashion, print and industrial design industries. Since 2012, she’s served as designer and product developer at Linie Design, one of the largest developers and wholesalers of handmade rugs in Europe. Her Memo Rug (2016) is woven from pure wool, with fringe on both ends. It features geometric shapes in neutral colors that captivate the eye without dominating the room. Linie is a member of Care & Fair, an organization created to help fight illegal child labor and improve living conditions of carpet knotters and their families in India, Nepal and Pakistan. Made in India. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
HAY Don’t Leave Me Side Table
Copenhagen-based industrial designer Thomas Bentzen believes that everything he creates should engage and create curiosity, be functional and meet human needs while in use. In other words, this is a designer who thinks beyond the obvious. A perfect example of his approach is the lightweight, portable Don’t Leave Me Side Table (2007) for Danish design collective HAY. Also known as the DLM Table, it features a handle for easy carrying from room to room and a tripod base for excellent stability. Made in China. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach

Treku Forma Large Mixed Set
Born in the city of San Sebastian, Spanish designer Ibon Arrizabalaga studied industrial design in Barcelona before starting his career in the automotive industry. Five years later, he quickly switched gears, so to speak, and began designing modern furniture. There’s a subtle beauty to Arrizabalaga’s work, which can be described as minimal yet harmonious. His Forma Collection (2017) is a modular solution ideal for a variety of interior spaces. Like a series of building blocks, the units can be stacked and positioned as you wish. Choose a ready-made kit, or create your own unit. Hidden clips secure boxes in place. Made in Spain. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Jens Risom Bench
Running into legendary designer Jens Risom in the halls at DWR headquarters was one of the many pleasures of working here. Over the years, we collaborated with Risom on a number of product launches. The Jens Bench (2008) came about when we worked with him to re-launch his Chair and Ottoman, originally designed in 1949 for the Caribe Hilton Hotel in Puerto Rico. Decades had passed since this collection was in production, and Risom worked closely with us on every step of its return, from reviewing prototypes, to adjusting tiny details, to advocating cost-effective changes in the manufacturing process. Like all the furniture by this iconic designer, this collection has a subtle Scandinavian sensibility that works with modern and traditional settings. Or, as Risom put it, “Good design means that anything good will go well with other equally good things.” Made in U.S.A.
Lína Swivel Chair
Iceland native Hlynur Atlason was a political science major when he was invited to an open house at Parsons Paris, a branch of the New York school. “There were all these people doing these really interesting things in art,” he recalls. “I switched paths right there.” To pursue product design, he transferred to Parsons in New York, where he continues to live today. The Lína Swivel Chair (2018) began with a desire to create a chair as one solid form. The result is both clean and complex, without a single straight line. Every surface is moving, and curves are continuously changing trajectory. “It’s a sculpted shape that one can enjoy examining,” he says. Icelandic for “line,” Lína “embraces you with all the softness on the inside.” Made in Italy. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Design House Stockholm Knot Pillow
“I’ve always been attracted to strange and unique things,” says Ragnheiður Ösp Sigurðardóttir as she explains how she developed her Knot Pillow (2011). “I try to create unusual designs, products that are unpredictable and that make people curious.” This piece started as an experiment with tubular knitting and ended with a knotlike pillow. Objekto Paulistano Armchair in Leather
As a Brazilian designer who was a member of the “Paulist brutalist” avant-garde in the 1950s, Paulo Mendes da Rocha gained international fame when he received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2006. At that time, Design Within Reach reintroduced the Paulistano Armchairs, a 1957 design that was never before made available in America. The original chair was designed for the Paulistano Athletic Club in São Paulo, Brazil, and is supported by a continuous 17-foot-long piece of phosphatized carbon steel that’s welded in one place. This is consistent with the original raw material that was used in 1957, and is meant to oxidize slowly over time. The chair is then wrapped with vegetable-tanned leather that’s meant to flex slightly. The seat can be adjusted along the frame for varying levels of seating angles.
