This House Stayed Low to See Further

Casa HD looks like a simple one-story home. But the house doesn’t really end at ground level.

Designed by Desvão Atelier near Portugal’s Serra da Arrábida, the entire daily routine stays on one floor. The bedrooms, living spaces, kitchen, courtyard, pool, and garden all sit close to the ground.

Then a staircase leads somewhere unexpected.

Not to another bedroom. Not to a second living room. To the roof.

The roof becomes a terrace, sun deck, and lookout toward the Arrábida mountains. Below, the house stays low and horizontal. Above, the view opens up completely.

Inside, oak and kambala wood, Lioz and Azul Cadoiço stone, handmade terracotta tile, and an oversized fireplace give the home a more tactile, slightly rural character without making it feel old.
