If you love a home that is draped in the warmth of wood, then the Collingwood Residence is one for you. Designed by BLA Design Group, this spacious, multi-level family home in Vancouver has been clad extensively in wood both on the outside and the inside. The house feels both private and open at the same time with the street façade being clad entirely in wood while the rear with its floor-to-ceiling glass walls and sliding doors creating a seamless interface with the garden outside. A small garden and a curated walkway leads to the entrance of the house and the entry room welcomes you with minimal style and a staircase.

Overall style of the home is minimal with the backdrop being anchored in white and shades of light gray. Elegant wooden accents in every room of the house usher in visual and textural contrast while a flood of natural light finds way into every level of the house. Décor like the round dining table and slim chairs, custom windows seats and bar stools bring a certain Scandinavian style to a home that is otherwise contemporary and refined. In the bathroom chevron-patterned tiles behind the white standalone bathtub and gray hexagonal tiles around the vanity mirror add to this restrained use of pattern in different rooms of the house.

The Yelm residence is a contemporary take on a country home: using a combination of simple, cost-effective methods to create a warm, comfortable space through clean lines and precise design. A minimal exterior material palette of wood and stucco siding with metal panel accents helps to highlight the beauty of the 10 acres of land on which the house rests. Centrally placed are the open plan living room, kitchen, and dining room. These rooms create a core space with expansive glass walls that connect the owners visually and physically to the landscape. Private views of foothills and tree-covered wetlands are offered through the transparent core, along with sightings of deer and elk near the back patio. Designed with radiant floor heating, heat-recovery technology, and natural ventilation, the simplicity of the floor plan’s organization creates an intimate and warm interior environment. A concrete masonry fireplace paired with the copper-toned, stained birch ceiling also adds material warmth. Circulation through the space is enlivened by built-in storage benches, acting as visual breaks and adding pops of color. Efficient planning and the repetition of elements throughout the house helped to keep costs down, resulting in an economically priced, modern home that compliments its natural environment.

  • Shepard Mesa House

    Located on a steep Cherimoya orchard in the foothills of Carpinteria, Shepard Mesa House is a new home for a young family of four. The neighborhood consists of dispersed homes along a single road leading up and around the crown of a hill. Sited diagonally to the contours of the hill, the house slopes with the natural fall of the land. Interior functions at three different levels are gathered under a single gable roof. Bedrooms at the lower elevations are nestled into the working orchard around them where the trees provide the most privacy. The living room, kitchen and dining area on the upper level opens downslope and affords the most expansive views. Neighboring homes are just out of sight as the view stretches out across the valley to the backside of Rincon Mountain. The siting, orientation, and plan take advantage of natural light and ventilation reducing the reliance on mechanical systems and creating a living experience in balance with the site.
