Inside A Home Designed to Listen to Its Landscape (House Tour)

From inside a home to the outside, Robinsons Run by Bennett Murada Architects is a family holiday house that has a deep connection to the Australian landscape. The residence is positioned upon a partially cleared rural property with a regenerating garden at the base of an escarpment. Following the brief, the architects took to replacing the pre-existing three-bedroom house that was originally used as a family home for the owners and their children to visit on the weekends. However, as their children had grown up, the clients took to renting out the property on weekends, which then helped to form the brief for building a new weekender and modern home for both the family and renters.

Following the house tour in from the back of the house, the architects have created a deliberately controlled entry program that generates a slow reveal of the interior design from inside a home. For the entry of Robinsons Run, the architects have placed a gate instead of a front door, which flows into the open plan architecture of the home while simultaneously revealing the diagram of the house. After entering the home, the house tour reveals the bedroom wing complemented with rammed concrete walls. Above this wing is the elevated bedroom that is reached by wide staircase. Deliberately, the architects have compressed and expanded the views so to create controlled moments and views of the surrounds. On the opposite side of the home is the living and kitchen spaces, which again have been designed with a narrow entrance before opening to views. Additionally, the house tour reveals another two living spaces inside a home, one for adults and another for children, as well as an arcade and wine cellar in the public wing. Also built into the landscape is a second structure that was created for the clients’ own use, however, this soon turned into shed for farm equipment, while upstairs inside a home is a single bedroom, kitchen and living space.

After the bush fires of 2020, the interpretation of the site was revaluated and allowed the architects a little more freedom with the design of the home. Additionally, after the fires, the clients were able to consider the site holistically and go back and reconsider the brief. This then allowed the architecture and interior design to turn from a modest weekender to a modern holiday house complemented with contemporary furniture. Early on, the architects made the decision to create a home that sat in the ground along with a garden, rather than on top of it. As such, this allowed the residence to become heavily grounded and protected from the south-west with materials such as concrete, stone and rammed earth. Conscious in its built form from inside a home to the way it sits upon the landscape, Robinsons Run evokes a deep sensory connection to the environment no matter the season.
