Corten Addition Transforms Butcher Shop in Chicago into a Modern Home

There was a time when every street corner had a tiny shop; a local store where everyone went to buy groceries, supplies and pretty much anything else they needed. The shops were part of a large house with the owner living above and running their business on the ground level. Today, such homes are becoming rarer and a project like the Cortez House in Chicago by moss Design brings back a part of this timeless charm. Revamping an old building in a busy Chicago neighborhood that had retail space on the lower floor, the new residence brings the old and the new together in a seamless manner.

The old sections of the retail outlet were upgraded and enhanced with features like a Bromann Brothers cooler being left untouched to serve the needs of the new homeowners. Beyond this, a more modern home takes over. A smart, space-savvy corten-clad addition now makes up the rear section and this is the block that adds a new upper level master suite that contains two bedrooms and a bathroom. Brick, metal and glass come together effortlessly at this transformed Chicago style that is draped in neutral colors on the inside.

Furring strips were attached to the exterior face so the Corten could be attached to the strips. This system allows for the water that seeps behind the Corten siding to have a drainage plane to get out from behind the wall, instead of inside the building. Aside from the beautiful aesthetics of Corten, the material naturally forms a protective layer of rust that blends nicely over time with the Chicago Common brick on the rest of the building…

    Sited on a site slightly under an acre in the heart of the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, the site for this estate residence descends over thirty feet from top to bottom. Narrow at the street and widening toward the rear, the building was designed to appear as a very private single story structure from the street and expand as the house moves into the site. Containing formal spaces for Entry, Living and Dining the house also offers a large entertainment style kitchen, Large Family Room, Library, 16 person Theater, Wine Cellar, Gym with Spa Bath including Sauna and Steam Room, secondary winter closets, dedicated two bedroom Guest House as well as six bedrooms including a Master Suite over 1,500 square feet with his and hers baths and closets as well as a garage for seven plus additional carport parking for three. All of this is balanced with a series of large exterior decks, patios and pool all wrapping around the stately eighty-foot tall Eucalyptus tree, which served as the aesthetic basis for the materiality of the building. Balancing the solidity of the extensive board form concrete walls is an expansive use of glass and the warmth of stained wood siding throughout the building. The remainder of the building is wrapped in integral colored steel troweled stucco. This palette is based on the colors and tones of the tree that is the center of the garden. Passing materials from the interior to the exterior, doors disappearing into internal pockets and flooring extending onto the decks and patios all help to create a seamless relationship for the interior to the exterior, house to land. This relationship realizes a full use of the site for its entire acre site.
