Situated on a triple-lot in Boulder’s Newlands neighborhood, this 3200 SF home was designed for a young couple looking to start a family and develop a property well-positioned for future resale in the Boulder real estate market. Our challenge was to preserve as much of the yard as possible while creating a 4BR, 3.5BA home that grouped master suite and kids’ bedrooms on a single floor, and accommodated a private guest suite, ample living areas, open kitchen, and detached garage with small studio space above. The gabled-roof design and divided light windows nod to the vernacular of adjacent properties while charred and stained cypress siding offers a distinctly contemporary tone. A long, horizontal volume stretches across the front perimeter of the property, concealing the large outdoor space behind. The design relies on standard wood framing to optimize budget without compromising form, and allows owners ample room to both grow their family and enjoy a fluid connection between indoor and outdoor areas.

  • Burnt Cedar

This is a full-time beach house for a car passionate family of four situated across from Burnt Cedar Beach in Incline Village, Nevada on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Prior to being pulled up the hill to flumes and rails destined for Virginia City, logs were staged here as the mountains around the lake shore were logged during the silver mining years of the 1860s. Set into a neighborhood originally built in the 1950s and bordered by houses to the sides and rear, the house takes a simple box form, half buried into the slope. It faces the lake with full height glazing that encloses a loft-like plan with double height living spaces. The clients requested a space that felt like the landscape and maintained a feeling inside of being outside in the light and shadow play of the sixty to ninety-foot Jeffrey and Ponderosa pines that populate the lake shore.  Perforated wood ceilings and acoustical plaster walls soften the sounds of the concrete and glass pavilion-like house. An underground garage is excavated under the house with level access to the street, a must in this snowy climate for a family with an eclectic car collection.

  • The New Old

It all started with a pendant light found in an exhibition in Paris. Named the New Old Light, it mixes eastern and western styles, old and modern aesthetics and encapsulated a lot of the ideals for a young Taiwanese American couple as they started their new home. This concept of the New Old extended beyond the light and became a central tenet to the renovation once the couple moved back to this space as a family with twins. The project was a small renovation of a kitchen and living room in a 1,000-square-foot condo to accommodate the family. The renovation included new floors, lighting, kitchen cabinetry, custom millwork and ceramic dinnerware for the space. The kitchen island design was inspired by Donald Judd’s library table. It had to provide adequate storage for the kitchen as well as function as an eating/work space at times. In addition, the island was constructed so that the storage volume could be removed from the bookcase legs and table top, for future use as a counter-height table. Sliding doors are constructed with hidden sliding hardware, and the design was inspired by traditional Shoji screens. Ceramic dinnerware was custom created for the kitchen space.
