Most hillside homes are designed to stand out. Tramuntana House was designed to pull back and almost disappear.
Created by OHLAB near Palma de Mallorca, Spain, the home is broken into five sections that step down the natural slope. Instead of flattening the land, the rooms move between existing trees, rocks, courtyards, and planted roofs. At the center, an open courtyard preserves a piece of the original mountain.
Custom terrazzo panels bring the colors and rough texture of the local rock into both the interior and exterior. Green roofs continue the vegetation across the house, while the long pool extends toward the woods and mountains.
Rather than becoming the main object on the hillside, Tramuntana House lets the landscape keep that role.
