A House in India Built Like Nothing Around It

From the outside, this house feels dark, dense, and protective, but inside, everything opens.

The Timber Residence in Vagator, India, uses wood not just as a finish, but as the main structural system.

Considered India’s first mass timber residence, the house is built with eleven glulam frames, raised above a sloped tropical site overlooking the Chapora River and the Arabian Sea.

Its charred wood exterior blends into the vegetation, its warm interior reveals the structure, and every part of the house shows a different way of building in a country still dominated by concrete.

A tropical house where wood becomes structure, atmosphere, and experience.
