Colorful Brazilian Apartment Makeover Blends Concrete with Contemporary

If you love modern Brazilian design that comes with an inherent hint of ruggedness, then you will adore this beautiful apartment in São Paulo that is no more than just 125 square meters in size. Dubbed Flora Apartment and designed by Studio Arquiteturas for a client who was willing to experiment both with color and pattern, the new interior of this space feels both captivating and vernacular at the same time. Brilliant splashes of color welcome you in here with a bright blue table and home bar at the end of the hallway. The living room is equally fabulous with a custom wood accent wall, wooden floor and a ceiling and walls in concrete.

Swing in the living area keeps things cheerful and moving!

There is no shortage of color throughout the apartment with each spaces showcasing bright pops of blue, green, yellow, orange and a whole lot more. Dining table chairs, accent cushions, wall art and other features bring color without taking away from the raw appeal of the concrete backdrop. A custom entertainment unit in wood in the living area, bedside tables in the bedroom and other décor pieces usher in warmth of wood while the bathroom with its colorful walls and graffiti-clad backdrop steals the show with ease. Greetings! We would like to submit our sweet little cabin to be featured in Dwell. My beloved and I just finished remodeling the home this past summer. I work as an interior designer & Jamie is a painter/contemporary artist – but we do lots of other things too. The intention behind this space in the woods is to offer a safe space for healing work, while it is our main home – we also hold retreats, song circles, sound healing, kirtan, yoga gatherings and tea ceremonies. It’s hard to explain the powerful feeling this land holds if you have not visited, but it’s palpable upon arrival. Your nervous system begins to regulate and all the worries of this human experience wash away. The cabin is nestled in the Santa Cruz mountains surrounded by lush forest and old growth redwoods. Only 15 minutes down the road, you are at some of the most beautiful clean beaches on the coast. The house was already very charming & has great bones, it just needed some TLC. I have lots of ‘before’ photos if you are interested. I love Japanese style bathing rituals, so we created an outdoor spa with huge sun deck, cedar hot tub, cedar sauna, and cold plunge. We also have a large yurt which is where we hold most of the gatherings & ceremonies. There is also a cute guest house not pictured in the attached photos. I hope you can see the magic through these images.
    With Gratitude,
    Eva & Jamie

This project was a true evolution of design. The owners originally approached DC+A about 10 years ago to design an informal home on their narrow cliff-side lot in the resort community of Lago Vista outside of Austin, TX. The couple worked with our firm remotely, trusting us to design their dream home. The original designs were for the narrow lot, but when a piece of land became available next door, the owners bought it and decided to re-envision their dream home to stretch across both pieces of property and leave more “breathing room” for the neighboring properties. The ultimate design is a 4,000 square foot limestone-clad home that frames views of the Colorado River from every room. The home uses some classic hill country and contemporary features that lend themselves well to the Central Texas lakeside setting, incorporated in a beautifully laid-back way. Featuring clerestory windows, floor to ceiling retractable glass doors and multi-purpose rooms, the home has an incredible quality and depth of natural light. The furnishings complement the architecture while remaining both casual and durable. Concrete floors add to the easy-going personality of the home, while redwood finishes outside and white oak inside reflect the riverside setting. The landscaping echoes the home’s relaxed nature with indigenous plants, while the Texas-sourced Antique Lueders Limestone finishing the exterior walls roots the home firmly in its setting.
