Part of this house disappears into the hillside. The rest reaches out above the trees toward the ocean.
Casa R.I. was designed in Zapallar, Chile, as a retreat for a couple that could also welcome their children and grandchildren. Instead of placing everyone on the same floor, Infante Poblete Montt divided the home into two completely different levels.
The guest bedrooms sit below, surrounded by thick stone walls and tucked into the slope. Above them, a long concrete structure holds the living room, kitchen, dining area, and main bedroom—all facing Zapallar Bay.
A 72-foot balcony runs along the ocean side, working like an outdoor living room above the landscape. Exposed columns and beams frame changing views of the water, rocks, trees, and rooftops as we move through the house.
Below, stone walls continue across the property to shape the gardens, terraces, pathways, and pool. Above, concrete reaches toward the horizon.
Half cave. Half lookout.
