If you’ve returned from a seaside escape wishing you could bottle up the calm, or you’re simply craving the soothing energy of the ocean, Calico Wallpaper just launched the collection of your coastal dreams. The design studio’s new trio of wallpapers – Lucine, Abalone, and Coralline – captures the ocean’s quiet beauty in every ripple, shimmer, and shell-like curve. Designed by co-founder and creative director Rachel Cope, each design is a love letter to the coastline, inspired by Cope’s time spent in and near the waters.

Coralline

“I was originally inspired by my quiet ritual of wandering the shoreline, collecting shells and treasures washed in by the tide,” shares Cope. “I’m so touched by the idea that each shell has a story to tell, and is a fragment of something greater. To collect them is to gather whispers of the ocean, remnants of unseen journeys.”

A display case contains various seashells, coral pieces, and polished abalone shell fragments arranged on a light background

To capture the natural beauty of these oceanic landscapes, the studio used real abalone shells and coral fragments Cope had collected on her travels to compose intricate, hand-assembled collages. Textures, tones, and organic forms were layered into compositions that feel true to Cope’s original inspiration – intimate and expansive, ethereal yet grounded. These tactile works were then translated into large-scale wallcoverings, preserving the movement, iridescence, and quiet beauty of their natural origins.

Each collection within the trio highlights a distinct element of the sea. Lucine is design that preserves the ephemeral moments of light dancing across water with soft gradients and pearlescent tones. Abalone channels the gentle motion of waves and the soft imprints left by shells, resulting in flowing patterns that feel both meditative and alive. Coralline offers a glimpse into the world hidden underwater, echoing the texture and structure of coral reefs. Together, they bring the ocean’s stillness, mystery, and movement into interior spaces.

The collections are available in a spectrum of colorways that echo the sea’s many moods and palettes. Lucine, the most expansive of the three, includes eight luminous options: Conch, Nautilus, Oyster, Scallop, Silt, Tusk, and Urchine. Abalone comes in four serene hues: Moonwash, Saltstone, Seaglass, and Shoreline. Coralline is offered in five earthy, reef-inspired tones: Algae, Brine, Kelp, Marsh, and Reef.
