Global planning and architecture firm Gensler is looking to reshape Baghdad with a newly revealed masterplan for Iraqs capital. In partnership with the firm Emkanat, Baghdad Sustainable Forest will cover over 10 million square meters and transform once-neglected land into a thriving district. Best of all, this combination of mixed-use buildings and clusters of residences is set within an extensive forest.

The design is particularly exciting because it provides a new vision for the former Al-Rasheed military campsite, which was previously filled with more than 45 million tons of waste. This forgotten space will now undergo a transformation into a project that’s the first of its kind in Iraq.

“The creation of a new urban forest at the heart of Baghdad will be transformative, making a major contribution to the environmental repair and long-term enhancement of the city,” says Ian Mulcahey, Global Director of Cities, Principal at Gensler. “The site, on the banks of the River Tigris, will become an extraordinary new destination for recreation and cultural celebration of Iraq’s capital.”

Some of the innovations in the area will include: an 853-foot commercial and hospitality tower that anchors the Al Rasheed Gateway; the reopening of a part of the Tigris River for public access with the River Gateway; and a spacious National Pavilion set within formal gardens. There will also be a hub for learning, entrepreneurship, and collaborations, thanks to three different villages specialized in science, tech, innovation, education, and creativity. In addition, the Vitality Village and Family Resort will provide wellness-focused amenities and leisure activities.

More than 1 million trees will be planted to create the sustainable forest, an incredible feat to build up the countrys ecosystem. The trees will capture an anticipated 22,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually, helping improve the air quality and creating a comfortable microclimate. To complement the forest, sustainable practices like walking, cycling, and the use of e-scooters are prioritized with an extensive micro mobility network.

“This landmark initiative carries a message of hope for all Iraqis, marking a new chapter in the capital’s history by transforming neglected, waste-burdened land into a thriving oasis and a genuine opportunity for growth and innovation,” shares Fadi Shoughri, CEO at Emkanat. “Our vision is for Baghdad — the beating heart of Iraq — to stand as a model for the region and a gateway that reflects a nation regaining its vitality and rising confidently toward the future.”

Baghdad Sustainable Forest is part of Iraq’s 2023–2030 National Environmental Strategy, which is the countrys effort to address contemporary environmental challenges.

Hygge Supply completed this ultimate kit home in June 2019 and began offering overnight stays to potential clients and design enthusiasts on July 1. Designed and built with the intention of being an experiential showroom for potential clients, Hygge Supply founder and designer, Kelly Sean Karcher, envisioned the home to incorporate those materials and products that fell in line both aesthetically and ethically with principles of the Hygge Supply brand. “I wanted this home to highlight the best of Hygge Supply. That included visually the design of the home, practically with the simplicity of the systems used to construct the home, and lastly, with the products and materials we used in the home. We wanted to partner with companies who shared not only a similar design philosophy, but that also were environmentally responsible and sustainable,” Karcher stated. Karcher and team partnered with several different companies to bring the home to life. On the exterior, Hygge Supply partnered with Thermory for the responsibly sourced, chemical-free spruce cladding. Hygge also used Marvin for all windows and doors in the home, which are produced in the US using environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. On the interior, Hygge partnered with sustainable architectural material distributor, Cara Green, to source solid surface Durat countertops, which are made from 30-50% recycled hard plastics and are 100% recyclable. Low-VOC C2 Luxe paint was used throughout the home. All cabinets, vanities, and kitchen islands are designed and produced by Hygge Supply, using no-VOC powder coat finishes. Hygge Supply partnered exclusively with Rove Concepts for the interior furnishings. With a focus on modern contemporary and Nordic designs, Rove Concepts aligned with the Scandinavian inspiration that drove Karcher to develop Hygge Supply. “I was drawn to the clean lines and neutral tones of Rove Concepts. The design of the furniture felt like it could be a natural extension of the home,” Karcher said. “At Hygge Supply, we believe in comfortable minimalism and Rove Concepts really offered that to us in statement pieces that were warm and inviting and could stand on their own.” Hygge Supply also partnered with Fermob to furnish the exterior, creating an inviting and elegant outdoor living and dining area in the large covered porch. Followers of the company can book a visit to the 3 bedroom (there is a bunk space), 2.5 bathroom house managed by the short-term rental arm of the company Hygge Stay.
